I took a break and tried again using the Oculus Link cable, -openvr launch option, and starting the game via the Oculus app. UPDATE: for those who may be similarly struggling There are several ways to get this wrong and apparently only one way to get it right. This may work fine in wireless mode also, more research ahead. Yet another project, I guess But the key seems to be to launch the game from Oculus app, not Steam. I turned reprojection off and set the resolution to native resolution of the Q2 but so far, still jaggy.

The graphics are incredibly jaggy, don't know why they are so much worse than on my 1080 monitor.

The result is a little confusing - there are worrying pauses and you have to hit F11 a few times it seems - but I get proper VR startup in the end with menus, head tracking, full 3d, and I can drive the truck. I started the game from Oculus app (in headset) not from Steam in Virtual Desktop or Steam native UI.

I switched from VIrtual Desktop (wireless) to Link (wired).

I'm not sure which pieces of my solution are really necessary, will update again later after more experiments. I've found a way to get ETS2 to start reliably in VR. for those fellow sufferers who have been struggling with this. No idea what I did right yesterday that made it launch into VR properly, or what I'm doing wrong today. But if I don't try to run ETS2, then other SteamVR games run just fine for hours of play on my Quest 2. Sometimes after a failure to launch ETS2 other games are also messed up (like the failure corrupts something) and I have to restart Virtual Desktop or SteamVR or both. You might think that my headset is wonky but when I try it with other games it works OK, other SteamVR games play reliably - I've spent many hours in Sports Bar VR and DreamFly and Sky Sanctuary for example. No "Start in VR" option as with other SteamVR games. If I get into the Steam native library (the aqua/green UI) and bring up ETS2 from the library, the start button says "Start in Theatre".

But mostly it starts on the big curved Theatre screen. Sometimes I get the ETS2 audio with black video, no graphics at all. Or I might get the ETS2 music while still in Virtual Desktop Home, with no game graphics. Sometimes I get a little further than that - I might get into the 3d garage with the wandering camera, but with no head tracking, with ETS2 music but no main menu. The game then starts on the big curved screen (Theatre). Right now if I start the game with Virtual Desktop, I get a warning popup that ETS2 does not support VR. I have unticked Theatre mode in Properties also. I have tried no option, -oculus, and -openvr and nothing seems to work. I have a Quest 2 which can usually run Rift content so not sure which option to use. Some online advice says to use -oculus launch option, others say use -openvr. is there one definitive recipe for the current Oculus/Vive beta? I am running 1.39 Oculus/Vive which was the most recent VR version I could find.

since then I have read several different recipes online for how to start up in VR but some are older and maybe out of date. Obviously I got it right by accident yesterday. Gave up, figuring I'd try again today.īut today, the game appears broken wrt VR - it will not launch in VR at all, no matter what I try.

I could get back into the game with another ESC but never did get to the main menu again. Menu/garage music was playing but SteamVR home graphics (circular grid with distant mountains) were showing through the ETS2 red/yellow haze. Yesterday I had ETS2 running in VR on my new Quest 2 and it was drivable!īut then the game got into a state where ESC would no longer take me to the main menu, but into a limbo with a Virtual Desktop popup saying "Waiting." that never went away. I posted elsewhere about a "little" problem I had while checking out vr support with my Quest 2.
